2005-06 - Marietta Kiwanis Major Emphasis

The 2006-07 major emphasis committee goal is to raise sufficient funds to purchase comfort bags and recliner rockers for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kennestone Hospital.

Kiwanis Sponsored Youth Organizations

Kiwanis K-Kids

K-Kids is the newest and fastest growing service organization for elementary students worldwide. These clubs are ideally suited for students in grades 1 through 5 (ages 6 to 12). K-Kids is a "student-led" community-service organization, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body.  The Kiwanis Club of Marietta sponsors K-Kids clubs at Clay and Pine Forest Elementary Schools.

Kiwanis Builders Club

Builders Club is Kiwanis organization that provides an opportunity for middle school students to work together in service to school and community. Its goal is to develop leadership qualities in young people through experiences in volunteer community service. Members experience the thrill of accomplishment and the satisfaction of knowing their efforts make a difference for those they help. Since 2000, our club has sponsored a Builders Club at the Anderson Boys & Girls Club.

Kiwanis KEY Club

Key Club is a Kiwanis organization for high school students that conduct an active program of service in the school and community. Its objectives include the development of initiative, leadership, and good citizenship. It is the largest high school service organization in the world, with over 210,000 members. Our Kiwanis Club sponsors Key Clubs at the following schools in the City of Marietta and Cobb County Schools: Marietta High, Harrison High, Wheeler High, Walton High and Pope High Schools.

Health, Safety and Wellness

WellStar Foundation

The Healthy Futures initiative is designed to address the health needs of people of all ages in the WellStar Health System service area with dynamic programs constantly modified to meet the changing needs of our community. Immunizations for every child in the WellStar service area by age two, and increased awareness of the need for immunizations for adults; Building/expansion of three-community health centers in underserved areas; Support for Safe Kids Coalitions programs including distribution of car seats and bike helmets and defensive driving classes; School-linked health services providing clinic supplies and clinic protocol manuals for every public school in our service area; A twenty-bed inpatient hospice facility located near Cobb Hospital including an endowment fund to assist those in financial need; The Women's Center at Kennestone Hospital; Educational programs directed toward teens about self-esteem, pregnancy prevention, AIDS, and eating disorders. Each year Marietta Kiwanis contributes financially to the WellStar Foundation in support of these projects.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community - based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Each year Marietta Kiwanis hosts a team in the Relay for Life Event. In 2003, the club raised and donated more than $6,000 and the Clay Elementary K-Kids raised and donated more than $1,500.

March of Dimes

The March of Dimes is a voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. We pursue this goal by funding programs of research, community service, education and advocacy. The March of Dimes wants all parents to know the joy of having a healthy baby. Several Kiwanians serve on the Board of Directors for the organization and each year the club raises funds by participating in the annual March of Dimes Walk-a-thon. In 2003 the club raised and donated more than $5,000.

Children's Miracle Network

Children's Miracle Network-the alliance of premier hospitals for children-is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids by raising funds for 170 children's hospitals across North America. Each year these non-profit hospitals provide the finest care, research and community outreach to help millions of children with diseases and injuries of every kind. The Kiwanis Club of Marietta has a rich history of supporting the great work of CMN and continues support the organization through annual giving.

Youth Leadership & At Risk Youth Support

Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta-Cobb County

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta strives to enhance the lives of at-risk young people through safe, productive after school programs. Since 1938, we have provided children with a positive place, results-oriented programming and a professional staff to guide them.

Cobb Youth Leadership

Cobb Youth Leadership is a leadership program for rising high school juniors sponsored by the Leadership Cobb Alumni Association. Through approximately five evening programs during the course of the school year participants in the CYL program are introduced to local, state and national leaders. They also receive information on the responsibility, ethics and tools for effective leadership. Students also participate in two retreats where they focus on team building, personality inventories and additional leadership topics such as cultural diveresity and community service.

Georgia Sheriffs Youth Home

To provide quality child care for Georgia's children who may be products of physical and emotional neglect, physical and sexual abuse, and disrupted families. The youth, who are not adjudicated delinquents, are often unable to function well within the structure of their own homes, public schools, and their community. Although these children are not severely emotionally disturbed, they are characterized by low self-esteem, emotional handicaps, poor social relationship skills, low frustration tolerance, and poor

Academic success.  The mission will provide opportunities for boys and girls in care to resolve personal conflicts, find their identities, and learn proper values as they work toward a lawful, productive, and secure future.

Education

Marietta Museum of History

Located on the second floor of the Kennesaw House, the Marietta Museum of History is one of Marietta's hidden treasures. The three galleries in the museum are overflowing with a wide variety of artifacts that is sure to offer something of interest for every visitor. The Kiwanis Club of Marietta financially contributes to the museum to ensure generations to come can learn and enjoy the history of our great city.

Cobb County Youth Museum

Cobb County Youth Museum. Unique among participatory museums, the Cobb County Youth Museum uses role-playing to involve children in the learning experience. -- Two guided tours of the museum are conducted each school day for elementary, middle school, and junior high classes. During the two-guided tours, docents dressed in period costumes lead the tours, involving the children in self-expression through role-playing and lively discussion.

Kiwanis GEM Awards

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta support the students and administrative staff at the Marietta City and Cobb County Schools three times each year by presenting the “Going the Extra Mile” Awards. The Awards are given to a student, nominated by their teachers, for showing a keen interest in education and having a positive attitude that make the educational experience a fun and worthwhile experience for themselves, their classmates and their teachers. Teachers are nominated by their peers for demonstrating exceptional drive and determination in educating our youth.

Kiwanis “Just Desserts”

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta supports the students and administrative staff at the Marietta City and Cobb County Schools each year during the Cobb Chamber of Commerce's Annual “Give Our Schools a Hand Celebration” during which the Teacher of the Year are named. Kiwanians, dressed in formal attire, deliver a dessert, via silver tray to each teacher, administrator and support staff member in Marietta City School System.

Kiwanis “Read-a-Book”

The Marietta Kiwanis Club sponsors an annual “Read-a-Book” program in which club members read a selected book to every first grader in the Marietta City School System. At the end of the day each student is given a copy of the book to take home. We know that reading is a key to education and our Read-a-Book program ensures every first grader in the school system has a book to call their System own.

Kiwanis “KIP” (Knowledge is Power) Program

Partners in Education

Partners in Education is sponsored by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Marietta City Schools system and the Cobb County School System. The PIE program is designed to establish a voluntary relationship between a business/organization and a school in order to; Support and enrich the education of students; Encourage and support school faculty and staff; Promote community strength and identify needs; and provide business employees and organization members the opportunity to identify the successes and needs of the public school systems. The Marietta Kiwanis Club is proud partners with Marietta High, Pope High, Wheeler High, Walton High, Harrison High and Clay Elementary.

Kiwanis Terrific Kids

Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis program for elementary school students that promotes higher self esteem, positive attitudes, and self-discipline. Students receive encouragement and recognition for achieving personal goals in self-improvement such as improved behavior, better relationships with peers, better school attendance, and better work habits. We are pleased to sponsor the Terrific Kids program at Clay Elementary School.

Cobb Family Resources

People! They are our most precious resource and our reason for existing. At Cobb Family Resources, we work with people in crisis, who want to turn their lives in a better direction. Our trained staff works with our clients, giving them "tough love", and helping them learn new self-sufficiency skills. Our donors give money for essential programs, and volunteers give time and talent to work with clients as mentors and teachers and to assist in our food pantry. Board Members give time, talent, and resources to form a foundation for the agency. Kiwanian Jeri Barr serves as CEO of the organization and the club supports there efforts through annual gifts.

YWCA of Cobb County

The YWCA has always been deeply devoted to having an impact on the community and began to implement programs to help the Cobb County community deal with the problems facing society. All programs of the YWCA exist to help women and families become self-sufficient and productive members of our community. The Executive Director for the Cobb YWCA is an active member of the Marietta Kiwanis Club and through volunteerism and financial contributions the Marietta Kiwanis Club continues to support the great work of this organization.

Conservation & Environment

City of Marietta; Keep Marietta Beautiful

During 1999, Keep Marietta Beautiful, the Marietta Clean City Commission became more closely allied with its parent organizations Keep America Beautiful and Keep Georgia Beautiful. Preventing littering and promoting beautification are the goals of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Marietta Beautiful. The Kiwanis Club of Marietta participates in the Adopt-a-Mile program named “Love the Loop”. The Clean City Coordinator for Keep Marietta Beautiful is an active Marietta Kiwanian.

Keep Cobb Beautiful

Keep Cobb Beautiful is a non-profit organization established in 1984 with the support of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners and local community leaders for the purpose of “assisting the County and the Board of Commissioners in establishing, promoting, and maintaining a county wide policy for improved environmental and waste management.” Marietta Kiwanis support Keep Cobb Beautiful and participates in the Cobb Trees Program.
