Kiwanis Advisor Ernie Russell reports that the Harrison Key Club has just ended a one-week “Pennies For Patients” fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  They raised $880 in honor of fellow student Mark Ellers who was declared cancer free last week.  To encourage participation, Ernie offered student pictures to the student who raised the most money from each of the 4 classes and a teacher portrait to the homeroom teacher whose class raised the most.  The teacher generously donated her portrait to Mark Ellers.  Members of the Key Club have been writing letters to elementary school students for Incredible

Feb 21 - Kiwanis Advisor Marcia Taylor reports that the Lockheed K-Kids made over 30 “bouquets” for the residents at Hillhaven Senior Citizens Home in Marietta.  They made paper cone vases and stuffed them full of tissue paper flowers that they sprayed with a floral scent so that vision impaired residents could enjoy their bouquets too.  The bouquets were hand-delivered on Sunday, February 17.  The K-Kids are still talking about the Christmas Toys For Tots Drive that they participated in.  One fourth grade girls said:  I am sooo happy underprivileged kids got presents because of us!”

Kiwanis Advisor Barbara Hickey reports that the PLC Key Club had their first outing in the Adopt-A-Mile for Keep Cobb Beautiful.  Our Club provided water and snacks.  The Key Club did a great job of cleaning up the area within a mile of the school.
 
Barbara also serves as the Kiwanis Advisor for the Clay K-Kids and reports the kids collected over 300 cans of food for their Can-A-Thon Kroger’s Thanksgiving project.  They have now adopted a Paper Recycling Program.  Every Friday either the Gold or Blue Team goes to each classroom to collect the used paper

Dec 18 - Kiwanis Advisor Ernie Russell attended the Harrison High School Key Club’s Christmas party on Tuesday, December 11th.  The kids loved the cake our Club provided which was decorated with the Toys for Tots train logo!  The Key Club collected toys for our Toys for Tots project and are very active in signing up for bell ringing. 
 
Kiwanis Advisors Jerry Hardee and Marcia Taylor provided cake and ice cream along with a Christmas card for each child with Christmas pencils and erasers to the Lockheed K-Kids on Wednesday, December 12th.  Toys for Tots Captain, Karl Schwelm, attended

Kiwanis Advisor, Ernie Russell, reports that Karl Schwelm attended the November 27th meeting of the Harrison Key Club to drop off the Toys for Tots box and posters.  Karl spoke to the students regarding our project this year.  Kee Carlisle also attended the meeting to recruit “ringers” for the Salvation Army at Town Center Mall.  The Key Club is still making blankets for the orphanage in Ecuador.  They are asking for donations of fleece to continue the project.  Their other projects include:  Adopt-A-Mile on December 1; Working at the Lewis Elementary School holiday house on November 30 and December 1.

Allan Lipsett, Kiwanis advisor, met with the Marietta High School Key Club on Wednesday, May 2.  The following are the new officers for the 2007-2008 school year:  Emily McCurley, President; Laura Biebel, Vice President; Sara Dover, Secretary, Ayesha Patel, Treasurer.  The Outstanding Key Club Member award was presented to members who attended most meetings and were most involved in community service.  They received a $15 cash award.  Members who received the Outstanding Key Club Member aware are Akeia Ledwell Mathis, Andrea’ T. Christopher Young, Danielle Ledwell Mathis, and Evan Wollard.

May Update

Allan Lipsett, Kiwanis advisor, met with the Marietta High School Key Club on Wednesday, April 25.  President Carrie Rainey led the nomination and election of officers for the 2007-2008 school year.  The Key Club will hold a Bake Sale in support of Relay for Life on May 22.

Barbara Hickey, Kiwanis Advisor, met with the Clay Elementary School K-Kids on Monday, February 26.  The K-Kids discussed upcoming events for Relay for Life.  The following events are planned:
March 2 – Pajama Day.  Students pay $ .50 to wear their pajamas to school or for a sticker to show their support without wearing their pajamas
March 15 – Lollipop Tree Day.  The students purchase lollipops for $ .25 or $ .50 with prizes given out
Upcoming events were planned that include:  selling American Cancer Society “Hope” Bracelets for $3.00, Penny Wars Week, and a May Yard

Marietta High School Key Update

Kiwanis Advisor for the Marietta High School Key Club, Allan Lipsett, reports that the Key Club will wrap up its MUST food drive on Thursday when several barrels at the school’s front entrance, filled with canned goods, are to be picked up. Club members gathered at the home of President Carrie Rainey over the weekend to make shoebox gift boxes of supplies for homeless women to be distributed by The United Way. Upcoming projects include a fund drive for MS and help with The Extension’s Run for Recovery in April.
