Community Services Committee Update

Thanks to the leadership of Pat McDonald, we collected $1,900 for Thanksgiving baskets to present to the YWCA.
 
Thanks to the leadership of Karl Schwelm, we collected 746 toys and $2,326 to present to the Marines for our Toys for Tots project.
 
Thanks to the challenge of Frank Bradford, the membership donated $1,425 to the Salvation Army’s Ring the Bells project.  More information to follow for the total amount collected at Town Center Mall!

Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign
November 15th through December 13th

Marietta Kiwanis Club salutes the 60th year of the Marine Corps Reserve program that helps needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas.

Nov 15 - The Campaign kicks off with a rousing speech on patriotism given by Colonel Doug Hardsion, USMC. Promotional flyers and Toys for Tots collection boxes are available for members to take to their schools, churches, and businesses. Remember only unwrapped new toys, gift cards, and money will be accepted.

Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots

The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program needs financial contributions to transact "Target Buys" for Atlanta area children ages 10 to 14. We complete our collection efforts this Thursday and give the Toys and the Money to the Marines in attendance. Please contact Pat Huey at phuey@mindspring.com prior to Thursday's meeting if you cannot attend and want to add a donation to your Club bill. For those who attend, there will be forms at each table to initiate a donation.

Veterans Day Parade Follow-Up

The city of Marietta and Marietta Kiwanis sponsored the third annual Veterans Day parade downtown and a ceremony on the Square November 11.

Veterans, marching bands, drill teams, floats, veterans' organizations and military vehicles participated.

Oct 20 - 0/20 – 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – Marietta Benefit Bazaar – Saturday, October 20th marks the city’s annual "Rummage Sale."  Scores of booths set up at the First United Methodist Church parking lot and Marietta Middle School’s campus will have on hand to sell everything from antiques to zoology books.  This year, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta will have a booth at the church parking lot, and we are soliciting items to be included in the sale.  Proceeds from our booth will go to our Club.  If you have anything you would like to donate - "anything" being something

Relay for Life WalkAmerica Campaign

May 11 - For the seventh year, Marietta Kiwanis will have a Relay for Life team. The event will begin at 6:00 pm on May 11th at Jim Miller Park and will run throughout the night. The overnight event will have hundreds of teams gathering to celebrate cancer survivorship and community spirit. There will be music, food, contests, awards, prizes, decorated campsites and on-site fun-raising activities. Someone from each team walks on the track during the entire event. At a luminary ceremony after dark, candles are lit in remembrance of those who lost their battle with cancer and in honor of survivors. You do not have to spend the night to take part in the event. Come for an hour, an evening or the whole night...but come!

March of Dimes Update

Calling all volunteers!!!  In the spirit of our NICU project for 2007, our club has agreed to provide volunteers for this year’s March of Dimes AlkAmerican Campaign. This year’s event will start at Marietta Middle school and travel around Kennesaw Mountail to finish back at Marietta Middle School; this is the longest event on this year’s calendar at seven miles. We will be providing volunteers at water stop number two, Kennesaw Mountain Visitor’s Center parking lot, and pre/post walk festivities. In the WalkAmerican tradition, water stops participate in the event as a theme, i.e., tropical, or patriotic as an example.

Marietta Parkway - from there we travel to the Huddle House on the South Loop to pick up trash along the Kiwanis mile followed by breakfast for those who want to join us. How does my blood help?

A single blood donation can be separated into components, which can help more than one person.

Red blood cells help accident victims, surgery patients and those with anemia.

Platelets help the blood clot and are used for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Plasma is used to treat patients suffering from burns or shock.
