Sponsored Youth Update

Kiwanis Advisor Ernie Russell reports that the Harrison Key Club has just ended a one-week “Pennies For Patients” fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  They raised $880 in honor of fellow student Mark Ellers who was declared cancer free last week.  To encourage participation, Ernie offered student pictures to the student who raised the most money from each of the 4 classes and a teacher portrait to the homeroom teacher whose class raised the most.  The teacher generously donated her portrait to Mark Ellers.  Members of the Key Club have been writing letters to elementary school students for Incredible Kids Day.  The project was completed on 2/26 and was intended to cover one complete classroom.  The Club is now planning to make visits to the Heritage Assisted Living Home in Acworth.  Students continue to make fleece blankets for an orphanage in Ecuador.  This project will take the whole school year.  The Club is also planning to volunteer on Sundays at the Petco store in Acworth to help with pet rescue, which is available at that store on weekends.  They are currently raising money to sponsor a student at Sedalia Park Elementary School to go to Jekyll Island.  This is a regular program at Sedalia.  Contact Ernie at worship1@gmail.com if you would like to get involved in this very active Key Club.

3/15 – Seeking volunteers to help build a playground for the Acworth Parks & Recreation Department

4/19 – Sending volunteers to Oregon Park’s Carnival Day
4/26 – Harrison’s annual Community Service Day.  A variety of projects are available throughout the community.  Last year the school had 300 students participate along with the Kiwanis Club of Marietta members.
